About Jinja Airport
Jinja Airport is a small civilian and military airfield serving Jinja city and the Eastern Region of Uganda. Established in the 1950s during the construction of the Owen Falls Dam, the airport has long supported general aviation, private and charter flights, pilot training and police helicopter operations.
Located about 3 km from Jinja city centre, the airport sits close to the source of the Nile and Lake Victoria, around 80 km east of Kampala. It operates a single unpaved runway of approximately 1,500 m and is one of the upcountry airports managed by the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority.
A redevelopment project launched in 2025 aims to tarmac the runway, taxiway and apron to international standards, positioning the airfield as a more practical entry point for tourism and private aircraft travelling directly into the Jinja region.
Passengers and visitors can reach Jinja city by taxi, private transfer or rental car, with onward road connections available to Kampala and other destinations in eastern Uganda.
