Iwate Hanamaki Airport is the main air gateway for Iwate Prefecture, serving the city of Hanamaki and the prefectural capital, Morioka, in the Tohoku region of northern Honshu. The current passenger terminal opened in April 2009 and consolidated airport operations into a modern, compact facility.
The airport handles domestic flights operated by JAL and Fuji Dream Airlines, along with international charter services. Its single terminal building is organized over three floors, with check-in and arrivals on the first floor and the domestic and international departure lobby on the second.
Located about 40 km south of central Morioka, the airport is connected to the city by scheduled bus services, taxis, private transfers and rental cars, with travel times of roughly 45 minutes by road. Hanamaki's hot spring resort area and nearby towns are also within convenient reach.
Passengers can use on-site dining, shops, free Wi-Fi and other practical facilities while waiting, and an observation deck on the third floor overlooks the runway.
