The airport operates from a compact terminal and a main concrete runway of about 480 metres, with additional shorter runways available. It handles regional flights from mainland points such as Cuxhaven/Nordholz and Heide/Büsum, as well as private and charter traffic.
Located about one kilometre east of the Heligoland main island and roughly 70 kilometres from the mainland, the airport is linked to the main island by a regular passenger ferry across the channel. Bicycles and luggage can be carried on the ferry, and most visitors continue on foot or by bike.
Despite its small size, the airport offers short walking distances and simple, efficient passenger handling. Together with the ferry connection, it provides a practical route for travellers visiting Heligoland's cliffs, beaches and the dune island.
