Hakodate Airport (HKD)

Hakodate Airport is the main airport serving Hakodate and the southern Hokkaido region, connecting the area with major domestic routes and a limited number of international flights. Opened in 1961, the airport has been expanded over the decades, including a 3,000-metre runway completed in 1999 and a new domestic terminal opened in 2005.

The airport operates from two linked passenger terminals: a three-floor Domestic Terminal and a two-floor International Terminal. Domestic services link Hakodate with Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo and Okushiri, while international flights operate to destinations in Taiwan and South Korea.

Located about 8 km from central Hakodate, the airport has no direct rail connection but is served by shuttle buses to Hakodate Station in around 20 minutes, as well as local buses, taxis and rental cars for onward travel to Goryokaku, Yunokawa Onsen, Onuma and other parts of southern Hokkaido.

Passenger facilities include restaurants, cafés, souvenir shops, a convenience store, a paid lounge, free Wi-Fi, charging points and an observation deck, making the airport a practical gateway for visitors arriving in Hakodate and the surrounding region.
