About Geilenkirchen Air Base

Geilenkirchen Air Base is a NATO military airfield in western North Rhine-Westphalia, near the town of Geilenkirchen and the village of Teveren, close to the Dutch border. It serves as the main operating base for the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Force's E-3A Component and is not a scheduled commercial passenger airport.

Construction of the base as the E-3A main operating base began in 1980, and the first E-3A AWACS aircraft arrived in February 1982. The E-3A Component was officially activated on 28 June 1982, and the installation has since supported multinational NATO airborne early warning, command and control operations.

The airfield lies roughly 6 km west of Geilenkirchen town centre and around 30 km from Aachen. Road access connects the base to the wider region, and local bus services link nearby Teveren with Geilenkirchen station for onward rail travel.

Because the base is a controlled military installation, access is generally limited to personnel and authorized visitors. Most travellers arriving for official or visiting purposes arrange onward road transport, and the surrounding towns provide accommodation and other services.
