About Fukuoka Airport

Fukuoka Airport is the main international and domestic airport serving Fukuoka and the wider Kyushu region of southern Japan. Its origins date back to 1944, when construction began on the former Sekita Airfield; the site later operated under US military control as Itazuke Airfield before reopening as a civilian airport in 1972.

Located in Hakata Ward, only a few kilometres east of central Fukuoka, the airport is one of the most centrally located major airports in Japan. It handles domestic connections across Japan and international routes mainly to East and Southeast Asia, and acts as a convenient gateway for travellers continuing to cities, hot-spring resorts and coastal areas throughout Kyushu.

Passenger services are divided between a Domestic Terminal on the east side of the runway and an International Terminal on the west side, linked by a free shuttle bus. The Domestic Terminal is connected to the Fukuoka City Subway, with trains reaching Hakata Station in about five minutes and Tenjin in about eleven minutes.

Buses, taxis, highway buses, car rental and private transfers provide onward connections to Fukuoka and destinations such as Dazaifu, Kumamoto, Nagasaki and Beppu. With shopping, dining, lounges and modern passenger facilities, the airport functions as the main air gateway for Kyushu.
