About Fukui Airport

Fukui Airport is a local government-managed public aerodrome serving Sakai and the surrounding Fukui Prefecture region. Opened on 30 June 1966, it was once the prefecture's air gateway, with scheduled flights to Tokyo and other domestic routes until regular services ended in 1976.

Today the airport has no scheduled passenger flights and is used mainly for charter aircraft, private propeller planes, gliders, and as the base for Fukui Prefecture's police, disaster prevention, and doctor helicopters. It is notable within Japan as an airport where glider operations are actively supported.

The single-runway facility is located about 10 km north of central Fukui, with a compact terminal building and parking for around 200 vehicles. Road access connects the airport to JR Fukui Station in roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car, and to Harue Station on the Hapi-line Fukui railway within a short walk or drive.

Although it is not a scheduled commercial hub, Fukui Airport continues to serve regional aviation, training, emergency response, and aviation leisure activities, and remains part of the broader Hokuriku transport network.
