About Fritzlar Air Base

Fritzlar Air Base is a military airfield of the German Army Aviation Corps located near the town of Fritzlar in northern Hesse, Germany. The base is home to Attack Helicopter Regiment 36 'Kurhessen' and serves as an important German Army aviation installation in the region.

Construction of the airfield began in 1935 and it entered service in 1939, later passing through Luftwaffe, United States, French and German Army use before becoming a Bundeswehr helicopter base in the 1950s. Today it forms part of the Georg-Friedrich-Kaserne complex.

The airfield lies about 2 km southeast of the Fritzlar town centre and has a single 1,043 m asphalt runway. It is reached by local roads, with the town and nearby railway links providing onward connections to Kassel and the wider Schwalm-Eder region.

Although it is not a commercial passenger airport, the base remains a key military aviation gateway in northern Hesse, close to destinations such as Kassel, Bad Wildungen and the Edersee area.
