About El Alto International Airport

El Alto International Airport is the main international and domestic airport serving La Paz and the surrounding highlands of western Bolivia. Situated on the Altiplano plateau at roughly 4,061 metres above sea level, it is one of the highest international airports in the world and an important gateway to Bolivia's administrative capital.

The airport has been in service since the first half of the 20th century and was officially inaugurated in its modern form on 18 June 1965. It was reconstructed in 1974 and later expanded, with a new terminal completed in 2008 as part of a wider modernisation programme. Passenger operations are divided between a domestic terminal and an adjacent international terminal.

Located in the city of El Alto, about 13 kilometres from central La Paz, the airport is reached by road through a steep descent into the city's valley. Taxis, shared minibuses, private transfers, and rental cars connect the airport with La Paz, El Alto, and destinations across the region.

The airport handles domestic routes to cities such as Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, Sucre, and Uyuni, as well as international services to regional hubs. With restaurants, cafés, shops, currency exchange, and medical services, it functions as the main entry point for travellers arriving in Bolivia's highlands.
