About Chiang Mai International Airport
Chiang Mai International Airport is the main airport serving Chiang Mai and the wider northern Thailand region. It functions as the primary air gateway to the Lanna cultural area, connecting travellers to domestic destinations and international flights across Asia.
Located approximately 4 km southwest of central Chiang Mai, the airport began operations in 1934 as Suthep Airport and has since grown into the region's principal aviation hub. Its compact layout places domestic and international terminal areas within the same building.
Arrivals are handled on the ground floor while departures operate from the upper level, making the passenger flow relatively straightforward. The airport offers shops, dining, lounges, currency exchange and car rental services.
The airport is connected to the city centre by taxi, ride-hailing services, public transport and private transfers, with most journeys into the Old City taking only a short drive.
