About Cat Bi International Airport
Cat Bi International Airport is the main airport serving Hai Phong, northern Vietnam's third-largest city and one of its most important seaports. Located in Cat Bi Ward, Hai An District, it also serves as the closest airport to Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Island, making it a practical entry point for travellers heading to the Gulf of Tonkin coast.
The current passenger terminal opened in May 2016, replacing older facilities and giving the airport the capacity to serve around two million passengers a year. Cat Bi was designated an international airport around the same time and now handles domestic routes to destinations such as Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Cam Ranh, Phu Quoc and Can Tho, together with international services to cities in South Korea, China and Thailand. VietJet Air uses the airport as an operating base.
The airport lies roughly 6 km southeast of central Hai Phong and is reached by taxi, ride-hailing services, local buses, private transfers and rental cars, with typical road travel to the city centre taking around 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic. It also provides onward links toward Cat Ba Island and Ha Long Bay.
Inside, the terminal offers check-in facilities, security screening, an arrivals hall with baggage claim and customs, restaurants, cafés, shops, a passenger lounge, Wi-Fi and other traveller services. A second terminal is under construction to increase capacity, reflecting the airport's growing role in the region.
