About Thừa Thiên-Huế

Huế is a historic city in central Vietnam and the country's former imperial capital, set along the slow-moving Perfume River. Its landmark Imperial City, royal tombs and pagodas give it a refined, heritage-focused character that distinguishes it from Vietnam's larger commercial centres.

The city served as the seat of the Nguyễn dynasty from 1802 to 1945, and the Complex of Huế Monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within the walled Citadel, the Imperial City and former Forbidden Purple City preserve gates, palaces, temples and gardens, while the seven-tiered Thien Mu Pagoda overlooks the river.

Historic neighbourhoods and districts include the city centre around the Perfume River, Phú Hội and Vĩnh Ninh with hotels and cafés, and the quieter riverside wards of Gia Hội and Kim Long. Along the river south of town, the tombs of emperors Khải Định, Minh Mạng and Tự Đức combine imperial architecture with landscaped settings.

Huế is known for its refined cuisine, from the spicy beef noodle soup bún bò Huế to small rice-flour cakes and elaborate royal banquet dishes. Nhã nhạc court music is recognised by UNESCO, and the periodic Huế Festival highlights music, theatre and crafts. Education, healthcare, tourism and services anchor the local economy.

For leisure travellers, Huế offers history, culture and river landscapes, while business visitors find conference facilities, growing tourism infrastructure and easy connections to Đà Nẵng and Hội An.
