About Thanh Hóa

Thanh Hóa is the capital of Thanh Hóa Province and one of the larger provincial cities in north-central Vietnam. It spreads along both banks of the Mã River and is often called Hạc Thành, or Crane City. As a commercial, administrative and transport hub, the city links the Red River Delta with the central coast.

The area has deep historical roots. Đông Sơn culture, famous for its ancient bronze drums, developed along the Mã River, and nearby archaeological sites such as Núi Đọ reflect early human settlement. In the city centre, the Thanh Hóa Citadel, built in the early 19th century, preserves the city's Nguyễn-era defensive architecture. Across the river, Hàm Rồng Bridge is remembered as a strategic landmark during the Vietnam War.

Central districts such as Lam Sơn and Ba Đình are organised around Lam Sơn Square, Lê Lợi Avenue and the Lam Sơn Theatre, with shops, cafés and administrative offices. Riverside areas near Hàm Rồng and newer urban zones such as Tào Xuyên show the city's ongoing expansion. Within day-trip reach are the UNESCO-listed Ho Dynasty Citadel, the Lê dynasty complex at Lam Kinh, Sầm Sơn beach, Pù Luông Nature Reserve and Bến En National Park.

Thanh Hóa's economy has grown with manufacturing, energy and logistics, partly driven by the nearby Nghi Sơn Economic Zone and its seaport. Local food specialities such as nem chua, bánh gai and chè lam, together with lively markets and street cafés, give visitors a direct taste of the region.

The city works well for both leisure and business travellers. Visitors can base themselves in the centre for urban sights and short trips to heritage sites, the coast and the highlands, while business travellers benefit from convenient road, rail and air connections, including Thọ Xuân Airport about 45 km away.
