About Tuyên Quang
Tuyên Quang is the capital of Tuyên Quang Province in northern Vietnam and a regional centre set along both banks of the Lô River. The city is framed by low mountains and riverbanks, giving it a calmer, more local character than Vietnam's larger tourism hubs, while serving as a gateway to the province's highland landscapes and revolutionary heritage sites.
Tuyên Quang has deep ties to Vietnam's modern history. The nearby Tân Trào Special National Relic Site in Sơn Dương district was a revolutionary base where Hồ Chí Minh and other leaders worked before the August Revolution of 1945. Within the city, the 18th- and 19th-century Hạ, Thượng and Ỷ La temples reflect a long tradition of mother-goddess worship along the Lô River.
The city centre stretches along the Lô River around markets, administrative buildings and tree-lined streets. Visitors can walk the riverside, explore the three ancient temples, or use Tuyên Quang as a base for day trips to the Tân Trào historical complex, Mỹ Lâm mineral springs and the Na Hang–Lâm Bình Nature Reserve, known for lakes, karst scenery and community-based tourism.
Tuyên Quang's economy and daily life centre on provincial administration, agriculture, forestry and processing industries, with tea and forest products among the region's best-known outputs. The annual Lô River boat racing festival and spring temple fairs draw local and regional visitors, while the food scene features river fish, smoked buffalo meat, bamboo-tube snails and five-coloured sticky rice.
For both leisure and business travellers, Tuyên Quang works as a practical base: it is the province's administrative and transport hub, it offers easy access to history, nature and ethnic minority cultures, and it sits within reach of Hà Nội via Noi Bai International Airport.
