About Amakusa Airport
Amakusa Airport is the main regional airport for the Amakusa islands in Kumamoto Prefecture, on the western side of Kyushu. Opened in March 2000, it serves as a compact domestic gateway and is the hub for Amakusa Airlines.
The airport sits on high ground on Shimoshima, the largest of the Amakusa islands, about 6 km from central Amakusa, also known as Hondo. It has a single 1,000-metre runway and one small two-story terminal, with scheduled flights linking the islands to Fukuoka and Aso Kumamoto Airport.
Ground transport links include a shuttle bus between the airport and Hondo Bus Center, taxis, rental cars and free on-site parking. By road, central Kumamoto is around 2 hours 30 minutes away, making the airport a practical entry point for exploring the islands.
Inside, the terminal keeps services simple and traveller-friendly, with a souvenir shop, tourist information corner, nursing room, accessible toilets, coin lockers and a second-floor observation deck. There is no restaurant, ATM or convenience store at the airport.
