About Kumamoto

Kumamoto is the capital of Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, a compact city often called the 'City of Forests and Water' for its abundant groundwater, greenery and historic garden culture. It is best known as the home of Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan's most impressive hilltop castles, and of Kumamon, the prefecture's widely recognised black bear mascot.

Kumamoto Castle, originally built in the early 17th century by the feudal lord Kato Kiyomasa, dominates the city centre with its curved stone walls and restored towers. The castle suffered major damage in the 2016 earthquakes and has been gradually restored, while Suizenji Jojuen Garden offers a calm strolling landscape that recreates scenes from the old Tokaido route, including a miniature Mount Fuji.

The city centre is easy to explore along the Shimotori and Kamitori shopping arcades, where boutiques, department stores, izakaya and cafés sit near the castle grounds. Kumamon Square attracts fans of the famous mascot, and the Shimada Museum of Art preserves samurai and calligraphic culture on the quieter western side of the city.

Kumamoto's food culture is distinctive, from basashi (horse sashimi) and mustard-filled karashi renkon lotus root to rich pork-bone Kumamoto ramen and the Chinese-influenced noodle dish taipien. The city is also an increasingly important business centre, with a growing semiconductor and technology presence in the surrounding prefecture.

For travellers, Kumamoto works as both a standalone destination and a gateway to Mount Aso, Kurokawa Onsen and other parts of central Kyushu. Its blend of castle heritage, local cuisine, compact walkability and rail connections makes it relevant for leisure visitors and business travellers alike.
