About Lusaka
Lusaka is Zambia's capital and largest city, set on a plateau at around 1,280 metres above sea level where the country's Great North and Great East roads meet. It is the nation's political, commercial and transport hub, combining a fast-growing business centre with busy markets and leafy residential neighbourhoods.
The city began as a railway siding in 1905 and was named after Chief Lusaaka of the local Lenje people. It became the capital of Northern Rhodesia in 1935 and of independent Zambia in 1964, a history visible in landmarks such as the Freedom Statue, the National Museum and government buildings along Independence Avenue.
Visitors can see wildlife close to the centre at Lusaka National Park, explore Munda Wanga Environmental Park or browse crafts at Kabwata Cultural Village and its Sunday market. Cairo Road remains the commercial heart, while areas such as Kabulonga, Woodlands and Roma offer malls, restaurants and a quieter atmosphere.
As Zambia's main administrative and business centre, Lusaka hosts government ministries, banks, NGOs and international organisations, along with conference venues and modern shopping centres such as East Park and Manda Hill. This makes it a practical base for both work and leisure.
Local food centres on nshima served with relishes, grilled meats and dishes such as kapenta, with markets and traditional restaurants alongside international cafés and fine dining. Lusaka is also a natural gateway for trips to the Lower Zambezi, Victoria Falls and Zambia's national parks.
