About Northwestern
Solwezi is the capital of Zambia's North-Western Province and one of the country's fastest-growing mining towns, set on the Central African Plateau roughly 590 kilometres from Lusaka and near the Democratic Republic of Congo border. Copper mining, led by the large Kansanshi open-pit operation, drives the local economy and has shaped Solwezi's rapid expansion.
Originally a small administrative centre that became the provincial capital in the 1950s, Solwezi grew into a busy commercial hub as copper investment took off. The Kaonde are the largest ethnic group, with strong Lunda and Luvale communities, and the town's best-known heritage site is the Kifubwa Rock Stream Shelter beside the Kifubwa River, where late Stone Age rock inscriptions are protected.
The compact central business district concentrates banks, shops, supermarkets and fuel stations along the main tarred road, making Solwezi a practical supply point for travellers. Outside the centre, day trips can include the Kansanshi Mine area, Kansanshi Game Park and Mitukutuku Dam, while longer routes lead toward the Copperbelt and Kafue National Park.
Mining and its supply industries dominate business life, and Solwezi's hotels, lodges and restaurants largely serve mine staff, contractors and visiting officials. Local markets offer fresh produce including the region's well-known Solwezi beans, alongside cassava and other staples, while lodges and hotel restaurants provide a mix of Zambian and international meals.
As the provincial capital and a gateway to western Zambia, Solwezi is relevant for business travellers working with mining and related sectors and for independent visitors using the town as a stopover on routes toward the Copperbelt, Kafue National Park and the far west.
