About Eskişehir
Eskişehir is a lively university city in northwestern Turkey, built along the banks of the Porsuk River. Known for its large student population, riverside cafés and creative energy, it offers a relaxed alternative to Turkey's larger metropolitan centres while remaining well connected by high-speed rail.
The city's roots reach back to the ancient settlement of Dorylaeum, and its Ottoman-era character survives in the historic Odunpazarı district, where restored wooden houses line narrow streets. Much of the modern city grew around railway workshops established in the late 19th century, giving Eskişehir a lasting industrial and rail heritage.
Landmarks and culture are concentrated around Odunpazarı and the river. Visitors can explore the Odunpazarı Modern Museum, designed by Kengo Kuma, the Eti Archaeology Museum, the Meerschaum Museum and the Yılmaz Büyükerşen Wax Museum. Sazova Park, with its castle and science centre, is a popular family destination, while the Porsuk River offers scenic walks and small boat tours.
The city is divided between Odunpazarı's traditional atmosphere and the more contemporary Tepebaşı side, which is home to several university campuses and a busy café and nightlife scene. Meerschaum craftsmanship, Crimean Tatar çibörek and a strong student culture give Eskişehir a distinctive local identity.
Eskişehir is also an important centre for education, manufacturing and innovation, with Anadolu, Eskişehir Osmangazi and Eskişehir Technical universities and industries ranging from rail and aviation to home appliances and food production. Its position on the high-speed rail line between Istanbul and Ankara makes it an easy stop for both leisure and business travellers.
