About Balıkesir
Balıkesir is a city and provincial capital in northwestern Turkey, set between the Marmara and Aegean seas. The wider province stretches from rolling inland plateaus and olive groves to a long coastline that includes popular destinations such as Ayvalık, Cunda Island, Edremit, Akçay, Erdek and the Marmara Islands.
The city has deep historical roots in the ancient region of Mysia and later became the centre of the Karesi Beylik before joining the Ottoman Empire. Landmarks in the centre include the 1461 Zağnos Paşa Mosque, the 14th-century Yıldırım Mosque, the Tomb of Karesi Bey and the 1827 Clock Tower. The Kuvayı Milliye Museum documents the local National Forces movement and the city's role in the Turkish War of Independence.
Central Balıkesir is formed by the Karesi and Altıeylül districts, where traditional Ottoman-era houses survive in neighbourhoods such as Aygören and Karaoğlan. Beyond the centre, Ayvalık and Cunda are known for stone houses, olive-oil culture and island views, while Edremit and Akçay sit at the foot of Mount Ida (Kazdağı). Gönen's thermal springs and the Manyas Bird Paradise National Park add to the region's natural appeal.
The local economy is rooted in agriculture, dairy production, olive growing and marble quarrying, with growing thermal and coastal tourism. Balıkesir's food scene is distinctive: höşmerim, a sweet cheese-based dessert, is the city's best-known speciality, alongside thick ayran, olive-oil dishes and fresh seafood along the Aegean coast.
For travellers, Balıkesir works as both a practical transport hub on the Istanbul–Izmir route and a gateway to two coastlines. Business visitors find a compact, walkable centre with university life and regional commerce, while leisure travellers use the city as a base for beaches, thermal resorts, historic towns and Mount Ida's forested landscapes.
