About Gorno-Badakhshan
Khorog is the small, high-altitude capital of Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, set in the Pamir Mountains near the Afghan border. The town lies where the Gunt River meets the Panj at roughly 2,000–2,200 metres, and it serves as the main supply point and travel hub for the western Pamirs and the Pamir Highway.
Khorog's identity is shaped by Pamiri culture and Ismaili heritage. The town has a compact centre with a regional museum, a busy bazaar, riverside parks and the Pamir Botanical Garden, which climbs the hillside above town and offers wide views over the river valleys and surrounding peaks.
The city is divided into small neighbourhoods along both sides of the Gunt River. As the administrative and educational centre of GBAO, Khorog is home to regional offices, a campus of the University of Central Asia and development projects that give this remote border town an important practical role.
For travellers, Khorog is the natural gateway to the Pamir Highway, the Wakhan Valley and mountain communities of the region. Foreign visitors usually arrange a GBAO permit before arrival, and summer is the main season for road journeys, trekking and local cultural events.
Despite its small size, Khorog offers guesthouses, homestays, simple hotels, cafés and a lively market where visitors prepare for longer trips into the Pamirs. Its border location and dramatic mountain setting make it relevant both as a travel base and as a centre of regional administration and development.

Khorog's food reflects Pamiri and Tajik traditions, with bread, tea, dairy products, soups and seasonal fruit from the bazaar. Guesthouses often serve home-cooked meals, while cafés in the centre offer simple local and Russian-influenced dishes.
