About Khatlon
Khatlon is Tajikistan's most populous region, stretching across the fertile Vakhsh River valley in the country's southwest. Its capital, Bokhtar (formerly Qurghonteppa), serves as the regional centre and lies about 100 km south of Dushanbe, surrounded by irrigated farmland, orchards and busy bazaars.
The region's history reaches back to ancient Bactria, and landmarks such as the Khoja Mashhad Madrasa, the Takhti Sangin archaeological complex and the Ajinateppa Buddhist monastery reflect its long-standing cultural significance. In Bokhtar, the Kurgan hill, Bibi Khanym fortress and the regional history museum offer a compact introduction to local heritage.
Beyond the capital, Khatlon is known for natural and cultural sites including the Sari Khosor waterfall, the Childukhtaron mountains, the Chiluchorchashma spring and the Tigrovaya Balka nature reserve. The Nurek reservoir and hydropower station also mark the region's landscape.
Bokhtar's bazaar, teahouses and small restaurants offer everyday Tajik food such as plov, non, shashlik and lagman, while hotels and guesthouses are concentrated in the city and in Kulob to the east.
For travellers, Khatlon works both as a stopover on routes between Dushanbe and southern Tajikistan and as a base for exploring lesser-visited historical and natural sights. Business visitors are drawn mainly to agriculture, trade and regional development projects, with the capital providing the main services and transport links.
