About Yunlin
Yunlin County lies in west-central Taiwan on the fertile Chianan Plain, framed by the Zhuoshui River to the north and the Beigang River to the south. Often called Taiwan's agricultural heartland, it produces rice, garlic, peanuts and some of the island's best-known coffee. Its seat, Douliu City, is a compact and practical gateway, but Yunlin's appeal spreads across small towns, coastal wetlands and the coffee slopes of Gukeng.
The county's cultural anchor is Beigang Chaotian Temple, one of Taiwan's most important Mazu temples, whose ornate woodwork and lively pilgrimages draw worshippers year-round. Huwei preserves the island's glove-puppetry tradition at the Yunlin Puppet Museum and the former Huwei Sugar Factory, while the Xiluo Bridge over the Zhuoshui River is a beloved historic steel landmark. Temple crafts and folk performance remain central to local identity.
Gukeng Township anchors outdoor leisure with the Janfusun Fancyworld theme park, the Huashan coffee-growing area and forested trails around Caoling. Coastal Kouhu and Sihu offer the Chenglong Wetlands, where large environmental artworks and winter birdlife attract nature visitors. Douliu and Huwei concentrate urban conveniences, night markets and rail connections.
Agriculture and food processing remain the economic base, alongside the Mailiao petrochemical complex and a growing tourism sector. The calendar includes the Beigang Mazu pilgrimage in spring, the Yunlin International Puppet Festival and the Gukeng Taiwan Coffee Festival each autumn. Local flavours range from Xiluo soy sauce and Cihtong garlic to Beigang peanuts, braised pork rice and Kouhu mullet roe.
For leisure travellers, Yunlin offers temples, theme parks, coffee culture and a slower, authentic pace rarely found in major cities. Business visitors come for agriculture, food processing and industrial meetings, with the high-speed rail station in Huwei linking the county to Taipei and Kaohsiung. This mix makes Yunlin a practical and distinctive stop between Taiwan's urban centres.
