About Taoyuan

Taoyuan is a special municipality in northwestern Taiwan, located roughly 40 kilometres southwest of Taipei. As the home of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, the city serves as the main aviation gateway for northern Taiwan and is one of the country's fastest-growing urban areas.

The city developed from an agricultural and market town into a major industrial and logistics centre. Its cultural mix includes Hakka, Hokkien and indigenous Atayal communities, reflected in local temples, festivals and food traditions. In Daxi, the riverside Old Street preserves ornate Japanese-era baroque and shophouse facades, while Cihu, the Shimen Reservoir and the Taoyuan Martyrs' Shrine are well-known heritage and scenic sites.

Taoyuan's main urban centres are Taoyuan District and Zhongli, each with railway stations, shopping areas and busy night markets. Daxi offers historic streets and woodcraft culture, Longtan and Yangmei highlight Hakka heritage, and the mountainous Fuxing District is known for Lala Mountain and its natural scenery.

As a major hub for manufacturing, technology, aviation and logistics, Taoyuan attracts business travellers to its industrial parks and to the developing Taoyuan Aerotropolis around the airport. The city also offers a lively local food scene, night markets and year-round community festivals.

For visitors, Taoyuan is both a convenient entry point and a destination in its own right. The Airport MRT and Taiwan High Speed Rail connect the city to Taipei and the rest of the island, making it easy to combine local sights with wider travel.
