About North Chungcheong
Cheongju is the capital and largest city of North Chungcheong Province in central South Korea, located around 130 kilometres southeast of Seoul. The city combines a long cultural history with a practical role as a regional administrative, education and industrial centre, and it is best known internationally as the birthplace of Jikji, the world's oldest surviving book printed with movable metal type.
That heritage is presented at the Cheongju Early Printing Museum, built on the site of the Heungdeoksa Temple where Jikji was printed in 1377. Nearby landmarks such as Sangdangsanseong, a hillside fortress with walls and walking paths, and Cheongju National Museum show the city's longer history, while the MMCA Cheongju branch and the former presidential villa Cheongnamdae beside Daecheong Lake add modern and scenic layers to the destination.
The compact old downtown around Seongan-gil is the traditional heart of the city, with shops, cafés and restaurants, while Suamgol Mural Village and the Uncheon-dong area known as Unridan-ro bring street art and a younger food scene. Further out, the Osong district combines the city's main KTX railway station with a growing bioscience and health cluster, including the Culture Factory converted from an old tobacco plant.
Cheongju is also a significant business destination. The Osong Bio Valley focuses on biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food, while SK hynix semiconductor campuses and related manufacturing plants support the local economy. Fast KTX links to Seoul and the airport make the city practical for meetings, conferences and exhibitions.
For visitors, Cheongju works as both a standalone cultural trip and a base for exploring North Chungcheong Province. Leisure travellers come for printing history, fortresses, lakeside scenery and local markets, while business travellers value its industrial clusters, transport connections and calmer pace than the capital.
