About Gyeonggi
Suwon is the capital and largest city of Gyeonggi Province, lying about 30 km south of Seoul. It combines a historic fortress city centre with one of South Korea's most important technology and business districts, giving it a distinctive role within the Seoul Capital Area.
The city's best-known landmark is Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site completed in 1796 under King Jeongjo. Its walls, gates, watchtowers and the nearby Hwaseong Haenggung palace remain the focal point of the old town around Paldal-gu.
Paldal-gu holds the fortress, Paldalmun Gate, Suwoncheon stream and traditional markets, while Yeongtong-gu is home to Samsung Digital City and major research campuses. Jangan-gu and Gwonseon-gu add residential neighbourhoods, parks, shopping areas and local dining streets.
Suwon is a major centre for electronics, research and higher education, with Sungkyunkwan University and Ajou University among its institutions. The city also has a strong food identity built around Suwon galbi and its fried chicken street, plus sports venues such as Suwon World Cup Stadium.
For travellers, Suwon offers UNESCO heritage, easy access from Seoul by train and subway, and a practical base for business around Samsung and other companies. Its mix of history, food and technology makes it appealing to both leisure and business visitors.
