About San Martín

San Martín is a department in northern Peru that bridges the Andes foothills and the upper Amazon basin, known for lush cloud forest, waterfalls, coffee and cacao farms, and relaxed high-jungle towns. Its main urban hubs are Tarapoto, the region's commercial and tourist centre, and Moyobamba, the departmental capital.

The region's history reaches back to Moyobamba, founded in 1540 as one of the earliest Spanish settlements in the Peruvian jungle, and Tarapoto, founded in 1782 and named for a local palm. Named in honour of independence leader José de San Martín, the area mixes colonial roots with indigenous and migrant traditions, visible in Lamas and other high-jungle communities.

Around Tarapoto, visitors find attractions such as Ahuashiyacu waterfall, the Blue Lagoon at Sauce and the San Mateo thermal baths, while Moyobamba is known for orchids and Alto Mayo viewpoints. Protected areas including the Alto Mayo Protection Forest and the buffer zone around Río Abiseo National Park make the region a base for birdwatching, trekking and nature tourism.

San Martín is one of Peru's important coffee and cacao producing regions, and its economy also relies on agriculture, trade and growing tourism. Tarapoto's airport links the region to Lima and other Peruvian cities, supporting business travel, conferences and the movement of regional products.

For travellers, San Martín offers a slower, greener alternative to the Andes and the coast, with warm weather, waterfalls, lakes and a distinctive jungle-influenced cuisine. It suits leisure visitors seeking nature and culture as well as business travellers connected to agroindustry and regional development.

San Martín Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The drier months from May to October are the most comfortable for waterfalls, treks and lake visits, with less rain than the wetter season. San Martín stays warm and humid year-round, so light clothing and rain protection are useful whenever you travel.

How to Get Around

Tarapoto and Moyobamba are connected by frequent buses, colectivos and taxis, while mototaxis are the standard way to move around town. For waterfalls, Lamas, Sauce or more remote spots, renting a car or booking a private driver gives more flexibility.

Where to Stay

Tarapoto has the widest choice of hotels and hostels and is the best base for restaurants, nightlife and day trips. Moyobamba suits a quieter stay, while Sauce offers lakeside lodges and Lamas has rural and community-based accommodation.

Food & Drink

Local dishes include juane, rice and chicken wrapped in bijao leaves, tacacho con cecina, and inchicapi, a peanut and chicken soup. San Martín is also known for cacao, chocolate and high-grown coffee, with fresh tropical fruits and juices widely available.
