About Karnali
Birendranagar, also known as Surkhet, is the capital and largest city of Karnali Province in western Nepal. Set in the fertile Surkhet Valley, it works as the administrative, commercial and transport gateway between Nepal's southern plains and the remote western hills and Himalayan districts of Karnali.
The city's surroundings hold a mix of religious and historical landmarks. Kakrebihar (Kankrebihar), an ancient temple complex linked with both Hindu and Buddhist heritage, lies west of the centre, while Deuti Bajai Temple draws devotees and visitors. Bulbule Lake, a natural spring pool near town, and the hilltop Bayalkanda Fort with wide valley views are among the area's best-known stops.
As a small but steadily growing city, Birendranagar centres on the Ratna Highway corridor, with markets, government offices, hotels and local eateries spread across its wards. It is the practical base for travellers continuing toward Karnali Province's wilder destinations, including Rara Lake, Shey Phoksundo National Park and the Karnali River.
In recent years the city has strengthened its role as a regional event and business hub, hosting gatherings such as the Karnali Tourism Meet and drawing attention to its Buddhist heritage and emerging tourism sites. Its position along key road and air links makes it a convenient first stop for independent travellers and business visitors heading deeper into western Nepal.
For visitors, Birendranagar offers a compact introduction to Karnali: local temples and viewpoints, a lively bazaar and easy access to some of Nepal's least-developed and most dramatic landscapes beyond the city.
