About Kavango East
Rundu is the capital of Namibia's Kavango East Region and the country's second-largest urban centre, stretching along the Okavango River near the Angolan border. The town functions as an administrative and trading hub for the Kavango, with a lively riverside atmosphere rooted in cross-border commerce rather than conventional tourism.
Rundu is especially known for the woodcarving traditions of the Kavango people. At the Mbangura Woodcarvers Cooperative and the Rundu Open Market, visitors can watch carvers at work and browse masks, animal figures and household items. These markets, along with small shops and street traders, show the town's role as a meeting point for regional trade.
The Okavango River defines everyday life here. Riverside lodges and viewpoints offer sunsets, birdwatching and fishing, while kayaking and short boat trips bring visitors closer to the river environment. Rundu is also a practical base for day trips to Popa Falls and Mahango Game Reserve, and for longer journeys into Bwabwata National Park or the remote Khaudum area to the south.
Residential and market neighbourhoods such as Tutungeni, Ndama, Kehemu and Sauyemwa fan out from the compact central business district. Rapid growth has brought new housing, shops and services along main routes, yet much of the town's daily life still centres on the river, open markets and small-scale trade.
For travellers, Rundu works well as an overnight stop and supply point on the B8 route between central Namibia and the Zambezi Region, Botswana or Angola. Business visitors arrive for regional administration, agriculture and trade, while leisure travellers use the town as a gateway to the wildlife areas of north-eastern Namibia.

Kavango East Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from May to September brings comfortable temperatures, less rain and better conditions for wildlife viewing in nearby reserves. The summer months from October to April are hotter and wetter, with greener scenery but heavier travel conditions on unpaved roads.
How to Get Around
Central Rundu is compact enough to explore on foot, while shared taxis and local minibuses link the main neighbourhoods and markets. For trips toward Divundu, Popa Falls or the Angolan border, travellers usually rely on private transfers, rental cars or long-distance buses along the B8.
Where to Stay
Riverside lodges and guesthouses east of the centre offer Okavango River views and easy access to sunset cruises and fishing. The central business area has more budget guesthouses and hotels close to shops, banks, markets and transport links.
Food & Drink
Rundu's food scene mixes Namibian staples, grilled meat and freshwater fish from the Okavango with Kavango and Angolan influences. Open markets, cafés, takeaways and lodge restaurants provide straightforward, affordable meals, with fresh produce sold around the town's markets.
