About Alif Dhaal
Alif Dhaal Atoll, also known as South Ari Atoll, is a central Maldives atoll celebrated for year-round whale shark encounters, clear lagoons and long, quiet sandbanks. Although it is an administrative atoll rather than a single city, its capital is Mahibadhoo and it brings together a string of inhabited local islands, private resort islets and uninhabited sandbanks.
The atoll's marine life is its defining feature. The South Ari Marine Protected Area, covering 5,610 hectares since 2009, shelters a resident population of juvenile whale sharks that can be seen in every season, while manta ray cleaning stations attract mantas mainly between May and November. Dive sites such as Kudarah Thila and Broken Rock add reefs, sharks, turtles and eagle rays.
Local islands give the atoll a more grounded side. Mahibadhoo is the administrative centre, Dhigurah is known for its kilometre-long sandbank and guesthouse scene, and islands such as Dhangethi, Omadhoo and Maamigili offer fishing villages, small cafés, bikini beaches and dive centres. These islands sit alongside luxury resorts with overwater villas, house reefs and private sandbank dining.
For visitors, the atoll is primarily a diving, snorkelling and island-hopping destination. Days revolve around boat excursions to reefs and sandbanks, dolphin cruises, local island visits and long hours on shallow turquoise lagoons. The tourism economy, fishing and boatbuilding shape everyday island life and keep the atoll closely tied to the sea.
Alif Dhaal works well for leisure travellers, divers, honeymooners and families looking for either resort seclusion or an affordable guesthouse stay with easy reef access. Business travel is limited, but the atoll's marine and hospitality industries, along with reliable seaplane and domestic flight connections from Malé, keep it one of the most visited destinations in the Maldives.
