About Zarasai
Zarasai is a small lake town in northeastern Lithuania, close to the Latvian border and surrounded by pine forests, rolling hills and seven lakes. Its calm, green character and waterside setting make it one of the most distinctive stops in Lithuania's Aukštaitija lake district.
The settlement was first mentioned in 1506 and grew around a trade route between Vilnius and Daugavpils. Under Russian rule in the 19th century it was briefly renamed Novo-Aleksandrovsk, and its compact old town still preserves a distinctive radial street plan, historic buildings, churches and the Zarasai Regional Museum.
Modern Zarasai is best known for its 17-metre observation wheel, which rises above Lake Zarasas and offers views of the lake, its promenade and Big Island, one of the largest islands in Lithuania. A lakeside pedestrian and cycle path, sculpture-lined shoreline and nearby Sartai Regional Park add to the town's outdoor appeal.
The wider district is rich in nature and local tradition. Visitors can explore the ancient Stelmužė oak, churches and manor sites, or attend the Sartai horse races held on the frozen lake near Dusetos, a winter event with roots going back to the 19th century.
For travellers, Zarasai works as a peaceful nature-focused base, a stopover between Vilnius and Latvia, and a practical centre for regional business, small events and outdoor recreation rather than a crowded urban destination.
