About Panevėžys Air Base

Panevėžys Air Base is a military airfield located about 6 km east of Panevėžys in northern Lithuania. It is not a scheduled passenger airport; its role has centered on military aviation, transport operations, training and periodic exercises.

The airfield dates to the late 1930s and later became a major Soviet military transport base, hosting the 128th Guards Military Aviation Transport Regiment with Antonov An-22 and Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft. After Lithuania regained independence, it operated as the Lithuanian Air Force Second Air Base from 1993 until regular military flying ended in 2007.

The installation includes a single runway, aircraft parking areas, 32 large revetments and an unusually large ring taxiway about 2 km in diameter. In recent years it has been used for occasional military exercises, including NATO deployments, and parts of its infrastructure have been modernized.

Because it is a military installation, public passenger facilities are limited or absent. Road access connects the airfield to central Panevėžys, while Vilnius lies roughly 125 km to the southeast and Kaunas about 130 km away.
