About Thaba-Tseka
Thaba-Tseka is the small capital, or camptown, of Thaba-Tseka District in eastern Lesotho, set high in the Central Range at around 2,200 metres above sea level. It is a remote, slow-paced administrative centre surrounded by mountain landscapes, rivers and scattered highland villages, and it feels far removed from the busier lowland towns of Lesotho.
The town was established in 1980 as the centre of the then-new Thaba-Tseka District, and it became widely known through James Ferguson's study of rural development, The Anti-Politics Machine. Local life centres on the market, small shops, a hospital, and government and aid-organization offices rather than grand landmarks.
The wider district is the main draw for visitors. The Katse Dam, a major part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, sits within the district and attracts travellers for dam tours and sweeping mountain views. Pony trekking is a signature experience, with the Molimo Nthuse pony trekking centre and the Basotho Pony Stud Farm, while hiking, biking, fishing and camping are popular in the surrounding highlands.
Thaba-Tseka also works as a practical local hub, with a bank, post office, hospital and small shops serving the district's scattered communities. There is little formal nightlife and the food scene is simple and local, but that undeveloped character is part of the town's appeal.
For leisure travellers, Thaba-Tseka is a base for highland adventures and a gateway to the Katse Dam. For business and NGO visitors, it is a useful centre for district government and development work. Reaching it from Maseru takes roughly 140 km of mountain road, partly gravel, so careful planning is essential.

Thaba-Tseka Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry winter months from May to September bring crisp, clear days that are ideal for mountain views and pony trekking, though nights are cold and high passes can see snow. Spring and autumn offer milder conditions, while summer rains from October to April can make gravel roads slippery.
How to Get Around
Thaba-Tseka is small enough to explore on foot, while shared taxis and minibus taxis connect the town with nearby villages and Maseru. A private or rented 4x4 is the most practical way to reach the Katse Dam and remote highland trails, especially in wet weather.
Where to Stay
Accommodation is limited but includes Mohale oa Masite Lodge on the main road through town and Katse Lodge near the dam, which is a good base for dam visits. Many travellers use Thaba-Tseka as a stopover on highland drives or pony-trekking trips.
Food & Drink
Eating options are modest, with small shops, the town market and simple local kitchens serving staples such as papa (maize meal), stews, bread and tea. Supplies are limited, so stocking up in Maseru is wise before heading into the highlands.
