About Quthing
Quthing, also known as Moyeni, is the southernmost town in Lesotho and the administrative centre, or camptown, of Quthing District. The settlement is divided into Upper Moyeni, where government offices and the district hospital are located, and Lower Moyeni, the commercial and transport hub that holds much of the town's daily life. It sits in rugged highland country near the Senqu (Orange) River, close to Lesotho's southern border with South Africa.
The town was established in 1877, abandoned during the Gun War of 1880 and later rebuilt on its present site. The wider district carries strong traces of the 1870s Moorosi War, and Fort Hartley, between Quthing and Mount Moorosi, recalls the British campaign against Baphuthi chief Moorosi. Missionary history is also visible at the Masitise Cave House Museum, created inside a sandstone cave by the French missionary D.F. Ellenberger in 1866.
Quthing is best known for its dinosaur heritage. The dinosaur footprint site on the outskirts of town preserves roughly 230-million-year-old footprints, some within easy reach of the centre, alongside a small craft shop. Visitors can also see the Masitise Cave House Museum, the Villa Maria Mission and sweeping highland viewpoints over the Senqu River valley.
Although small, Quthing functions as a service and administrative centre for southern Lesotho and a useful stop on the Southern Rustic Route. Its markets, shops, taxi ranks and government services draw people from surrounding villages, while the highland scenery and heritage sites appeal to travellers exploring the less-visited south of the country.
For business visitors, Quthing offers access to district administration, trade and local services, though facilities remain modest. For leisure travellers, it provides a quieter, more rural alternative to Maseru, with archaeology, mission history and mountain landscapes as its main draws.
