About Qacha's Nek
Qacha's Nek is a small, remote highland town in southeastern Lesotho and the administrative centre of Qacha's Nek District. It sits at roughly 1,980 metres above sea level and lies only about two kilometres from the South African border, making it a quiet mountain gateway between Lesotho's southern highlands and South Africa's Eastern Cape.
The town has served as the district's camptown since 1888. Its name comes from Qacha, the son of the Baphuthi chief Moorosi, whose cave is located beneath the sandstone cliff of Letloepe. Below that landmark, Qacha's Nek Snake Park showcases local snakes and adds an unusual stop for visitors.
Qacha's Nek is best known as the access point for Sehlabathebe National Park, part of the UNESCO-listed Maloti-Drakensberg Park. The park protects dramatic sandstone formations, high-altitude grasslands, wetlands and San rock art, and can be reached along scenic but rough mountain tracks. The Qacha's Nek Pass, a long gravel route through the mountains, is itself part of the journey.
As a small camptown, Qacha's Nek acts as a trading and services centre for surrounding villages, with shops, government offices, a hospital and schools. Its economy is tied to border trade, public administration, and livestock farming, including wool and mohair production.
For travellers, Qacha's Nek offers a base for highland hiking, pony trekking and exploring one of Lesotho's most untouched landscapes, while its border post and district offices give it practical relevance for cross-border and administrative visits.
