About Mokhotlong

Mokhotlong is the highland camptown and administrative seat of Mokhotlong District in northeastern Lesotho. Set at around 2,200 metres in the Maloti Mountains, its Sesotho name means "Place of the Bald Ibis". The town is small and remote, but it anchors a district that contains some of the highest terrain in southern Africa.

The district's landscape is dominated by the Maloti range and the upper Senqu River, which becomes the Orange River in South Africa. Thabana Ntlenyana, southern Africa's highest peak at 3,482 metres, rises within the district, and winters bring cold temperatures and occasional snow. Mokhotlong developed from an early 20th-century police post into the only sizeable town in the district.

Most visitors use Mokhotlong as a base for mountain scenery and outdoor routes. Nearby experiences include the winding Sani Pass on the border with South Africa, the upper Senqu valley, highland Basotho villages, pony trekking, and stops at the Letšeng diamond mine, among the world's highest. The Polihali Dam, part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, is being built downstream on the Senqu.

The economy centres on diamond mining, wool and mohair production, small-scale farming, trade and the growing water infrastructure sector. Mokhotlong remains a useful service and supply point for these activities and for cross-border movement through the Sani Pass.

For travellers, Mokhotlong offers a different Lesotho: dramatic high-altitude landscapes, traditional village life and adventure rather than big-city services. It suits independent travellers, guided tours and business visitors involved in mining or water projects, provided they plan for remote roads and changeable mountain weather.

Mokhotlong Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry winter months from May to August usually bring clear skies and occasional snow, but temperatures drop well below freezing at night. Summer, from October to April, is warmer and greener, although thunderstorms and wet, muddy mountain roads are more common.

How to Get Around

Mokhotlong town is compact enough to explore on foot, but reaching outlying valleys, the Sani Pass and highland viewpoints requires a sturdy vehicle, ideally a 4x4. Shared taxis and minibuses link the town with Maseru, while private transfers and chauffeur services are useful for longer mountain journeys.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is limited but includes small guesthouses and lodges in and around Mokhotlong town, with additional options at Sani Top near the pass and in Basotho village homestays. Booking ahead is wise in high season and for groups or project teams.

Food & Drink

Local meals are simple and filling, built around papa, stews, moroho and fresh bread such as vetkoek, with cafés and lodges serving the most reliable meals in town. Supplies are more limited than in Maseru, so visitors heading into remote areas often carry their own food and water.
