About Guanacaste
Liberia is the capital of Guanacaste province and the main gateway to Costa Rica's northwestern Pacific coast. Known locally as la Ciudad Blanca, or the White City, for its whitewashed colonial-era buildings, the city combines a relaxed provincial atmosphere with growing tourism infrastructure.
Founded during the colonial period and later renamed Liberia, the city preserves strong sabanero, or cowboy, culture and Guanacastecan identity. Its historic centre includes the whitewashed Church of the Immaculate Conception beside the central park, old colonial-style buildings along Calle Real and the Museo de Guanacaste, which tells the story of the region.
Around the central park, visitors can explore the old quarter, public squares, shops and small museums. The city's greatest appeal is its location: Rincón de la Vieja National Park lies nearby with volcanic landscapes, hot springs and hiking, while Pacific beaches such as Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa and Tamarindo are roughly an hour away.
Liberia works as the commercial and service hub of Guanacaste, supported by its international airport, hotels, shops and restaurants. Local events such as the July annexation celebrations and the annual Liberia Expo highlight its regional importance, and the food scene ranges from traditional Guanacastecan dishes to international dining.
For leisure travellers, Liberia offers convenient access to beaches, national parks and hot springs; for business visitors, it is the administrative and logistical centre of a fast-growing region. Its airport, hotels and transport links make it a practical base and entry point for the province.
