About Limón

Limón, commonly called Puerto Limón, is Costa Rica's main Caribbean port city and the capital of Limón Province. Set on the Caribbean coast, it is the country's gateway for container shipping, banana exports and cruise arrivals, and the heart of Costa Rica's Afro-Caribbean culture.

The city's story begins with Christopher Columbus anchoring near the coast in 1502, but its modern growth came in the late 19th century with the railway linking the port to San José. Workers from Jamaica and other Caribbean islands shaped Limón's distinctive culture, which today is expressed in calypso and reggae music, Limonese Creole, and the colourful October carnival. Parque Vargas, the waterfront Malecón and the central market anchor daily life.

Beyond the compact centre, Playa Bonita offers a nearby beach, while Veragua Rainforest Park provides canopy walks and wildlife viewing. To the north, the canals of Tortuguero National Park shelter manatees, monkeys, birds and nesting sea turtles; to the south, Cahuita National Park and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca draw visitors to their beaches and coral reefs.

Economically, Limón remains vital as Costa Rica's principal Caribbean seaport, with a busy container terminal and regular cruise traffic. Local food blends Caribbean and Central American traditions, from coconut rice and beans and seafood rondón to patí, plantains and fresh tropical fruit. The annual carnival around 12 October is the city's biggest cultural event.

Limón works well for travellers combining culture, nature and coast. Leisure visitors use it as a base for Caribbean beaches and rainforest, while business and cruise travellers pass through the port and nearby terminals; both can reach the city easily from Limón International Airport, just minutes from the centre.
