Barra del Colorado Airport (BCL)

Barra del Colorado Airport is a small domestic airstrip serving Barra del Colorado and the surrounding wildlife refuge in Limón Province, northeastern Costa Rica, close to the border with Nicaragua. It provides the fastest air link to a roadless region of Caribbean coastline, canals and wetlands.

The airport has a single 1,000-metre concrete runway and a basic open-air passenger shelter rather than a conventional terminal. Operations are limited to daylight hours and focus on domestic flights, charter services and lodge aircraft, with small carriers such as Sansa and Aerobell connecting the area to San José.

Located about 115 kilometres northeast of San José, the airport cannot be reached by road; access is by small plane or boat. Scheduled domestic flights typically take around 30 to 45 minutes, while boat transfers move arriving passengers through the Colorado River canals to lodges, eco-resorts and the village.

Passenger facilities are intentionally simple, with basic restrooms and seating but no restaurants, shops or Wi-Fi. Visitors usually coordinate boat pick-ups with their accommodation in advance and pack light, making the airport a practical gateway for sport fishing, wildlife watching and exploring the surrounding wetlands.
