About Liaoning
Shenyang is the capital and largest city of Liaoning province in Northeast China, known for its Manchu imperial heritage, industrial history and role as a regional transport and business hub. Its best-known landmark, the Shenyang Imperial Palace, reflects the city's time as an early Qing dynasty capital.
The city's past remains visible throughout Shenyang. Formerly called Mukden and later Fengtian, Shenyang served as the Manchu seat of power before the Qing court moved to Beijing. UNESCO-listed sites include the Imperial Palace and the Fuling and Zhaoling tombs, while the 9.18 Historical Museum documents the Mukden Incident of 1931.
Central districts such as Heping and Shenhe hold much of the city's commercial and historic life. Shenhe is home to the Imperial Palace and Zhongjie pedestrian street, Heping centres on Taiyuan Street shopping, and Tiexi preserves the city's industrial heritage with museums and creative parks converted from old factories.
Shenyang is also a major centre for manufacturing, automotive production, aviation and trade, with long-standing industrial strengths and a growing conference and events calendar. Its food scene combines hearty northeastern Chinese cooking, local dumplings and Korean-influenced barbecue across restaurants, markets and lively street-food areas.
For travellers, Shenyang offers a practical mix of history, culture, business and entertainment, with good rail and air connections to Beijing, Dalian, Harbin and other cities across Northeast China.
