About Piauí
Teresina is the capital of Piauí and the only state capital in Brazil's Northeast located inland, built where the Parnaíba and Poti rivers meet. Planned from its founding in 1852, the city is known as Cidade Verde for its mango-lined streets and green spaces, and as Capital do Sol e da Luz for its year-round sunshine.
The historic centre still shows Teresina's origins through colonial-era buildings, churches and small museums, while modern districts and a growing skyline reflect the city's role as Piauí's political, commercial and service hub. Landmarks such as the Palácio de Karnak, the Museu do Piauí and the Igreja de São Benedito sit close to the riverfront, and the cable-stayed Ponte Estaiada offers a viewpoint over the meeting of the rivers.
Neighbourhoods such as Centro, Fátima and Jóquei Clube each have a distinct character, from government buildings and shopping streets to residential areas with restaurants, hotels and nightlife. The Encontro dos Rios, Parque Potycabana and the Central de Artesanato Mestre Dezinho give visitors accessible ways to experience local nature and handicrafts.
As the state's economic centre, Teresina draws business travellers for government, education, health services and regional commerce, while events and festivals run throughout the year. The local food scene features Piauí dishes such as carne de sol, paçoca de pilão, Maria Isabel and baião de dois.
For leisure and business visitors alike, Teresina offers a compact, welcoming introduction to northeastern Brazil, with easy access to nearby river landscapes and a quieter alternative to Brazil's larger coastal capitals.
