About Tocantins

Palmas is the planned capital of Tocantins and Brazil's youngest state capital, founded in 1989 and officially inaugurated in 1990. Built on the right bank of the Tocantins River, the city overlooks the Lago de Palmas reservoir and is known for its modern, organised urban design, wide avenues and clearly divided sectors.

Praça dos Girassóis, one of the largest public squares in Latin America, forms the civic heart of the city and is surrounded by landmarks such as the Palácio Araguaia, the seat of the state government, along with monuments including the Memorial Coluna Prestes and the Cruzeiro. Museums and cultural venues such as the Museu Histórico do Tocantins and Espaço Cultural document the region's recent statehood and cultural roots.

The lakefront and river beaches define much of local life. Praia da Graciosa has a long boardwalk, bars and regular cultural events, while Praia do Prata, Praia do Caju and Ilha do Canela offer swimming and relaxed riverside leisure. Green spaces such as Parque Cesamar and Parque dos Povos Indígenas provide walking and recreation, and the nearby Taquaruçu district is known for waterfalls and ecotourism in the surrounding hills.

As the administrative and economic centre of Tocantins, Palmas concentrates government services, agribusiness offices, trade, education and regional events. Its food scene features cerrado ingredients and river fish, with dishes based on pequi and tucunaré served alongside markets, cafés and the Feira do Bosque fair. Nightlife gathers around central avenues and the Graciosa waterfront.

Palmas appeals to leisure travellers for its river beaches, waterfalls, parks and access to the Jalapão region, while business visitors find a functional capital with government institutions, meeting spaces and a growing service economy. The combination of a young planned city, warm climate and strong regional role makes it a distinctive gateway to central Brazil.

Tocantins Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from May to September is the most pleasant period for river beaches, waterfalls and outdoor sightseeing. Palmas stays warm and sunny for much of the year, while the rainy months from October to April bring heavier showers and greener landscapes.

How to Get Around

Palmas is a spread-out planned city, so distances between districts can be long. Public buses cover the main areas, while taxis, ride-hailing apps and rental cars are practical for reaching the lakefront, Taquaruçu and the airport around 30 km from the centre.

Where to Stay

The central area near Praça dos Girassóis and Avenida JK is convenient for business, shopping and government offices. Stays near Praia da Graciosa suit visitors who want lakefront access, while Taquaruçu offers quieter lodgings close to waterfalls and nature.

Food & Drink

Local cuisine centres on cerrado ingredients and Tocantins River fish, with dishes such as pequi rice and grilled tucunaré widely available. The Feira do Bosque market, lakeside quiosques and neighbourhood restaurants offer a mix of regional food, snacks and fresh fruit.
