About Santa Catarina
Florianópolis is the capital of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil and the main city on Santa Catarina Island, a destination shaped by the sea, lagoons and Atlantic Forest hills. Often called Floripa, it is known for combining urban life, technology companies and more than 40 beaches within easy reach of the centre.
The city's identity reflects its Azorean settler heritage, visible in the historic centre around Praça XV de Novembro, the 18th-century Catedral Metropolitana and the Mercado Público. The Hercílio Luz Bridge, opened in 1926, remains the island's best-known landmark and connects the island to the mainland.
Central Florianópolis concentrates commerce, government buildings and restaurants, while Lagoa da Conceição draws visitors for water sports, bars and a lively evening scene. Santo António de Lisboa and Ribeirão da Ilha preserve traditional Azorean architecture and seafood culture, and beach neighbourhoods such as Campeche, Joaquina and Jurerê Internacional each offer a different coastal atmosphere.
Florianópolis is also a growing technology and innovation hub, home to universities, startups and business events, alongside a tourism economy built on surfing, sailing and ecotourism. Oysters, fresh fish and Azorean-influenced cooking define much of the local food scene.
For leisure travellers, the island provides beaches, trails, culture and water activities, while business visitors find modern hotels, meeting venues and easy access between the airport, downtown and beach districts.

Santa Catarina Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
Summer from December to March is warmest and liveliest, ideal for beaches and festivals, though it is also the busiest period. Autumn and spring bring mild weather and fewer crowds, while winter is cooler, quieter and still suitable for city visits.
How to Get Around
The island is served by an integrated bus network that links the centre with major neighbourhoods and beaches, plus taxis and ride-hailing apps. Renting a car is useful for reaching southern and eastern beaches at your own pace, and the Hercílio Luz Bridge connects the island to mainland Santa Catarina.
Where to Stay
Centro and Beira-Mar Norte suit business travellers and those wanting easy access to restaurants and services. Lagoa da Conceição is popular for nightlife and water sports, Jurerê Internacional offers upscale resorts, and Campeche or Joaquina provide a more relaxed beach stay.
Food & Drink
Florianópolis is famous for oysters from the Ribeirão da Ilha area, along with fresh fish, shrimp and Azorean-influenced dishes such as pirão and berbigão. The Mercado Público, beachfront restaurants and neighbourhood bars offer a wide range of seafood, casual meals and local cachaça.
