About Maranhão
São Luís is the capital of Maranhão and one of Brazil's most distinctive historic cities, set on São Luís Island (Upaon-Açu) in the country's Northeast. Founded by the French in 1612 and later shaped by Portuguese and Dutch rule, its colonial core was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and is widely known as the 'City of Tiles' for its facades covered in Portuguese azulejos.
The historic centre clusters around Praia Grande and Reviver, where restored mansions, churches and museums line streets such as Rua Portugal. Landmarks include the Palácio dos Leões, the Igreja da Sé, the Convento das Mercês and the Museu Histórico e Artístico do Maranhão.
Beyond the old town, São Luís spreads along São Marcos Bay with coastal neighbourhoods such as Ponta d'Areia, Calhau and Renascença, home to beaches, hotels, shopping and restaurants. Lagoa da Jansen and Praia do Calhau are popular leisure spots.
São Luís is also a cultural powerhouse, famous for Bumba Meu Boi, Tambor de Crioula, the Dança do Lelê and a strong reggae scene that has earned it the nickname 'Brazilian Jamaica'. Its June festivals are among the most vibrant in the country.
As Maranhão's economic centre, the city is tied to Porto do Itaqui, the Ponta da Madeira mineral terminal and the Carajás railway, alongside services, commerce and tourism. This mix of heritage, culture and business makes São Luís relevant for leisure and business travellers alike.
