About Ecuador
Ecuador is a compact South American destination where Andean highlands, Amazon rainforest, Pacific coastline and the Galápagos Islands come together within a relatively small area. Its mix of colonial cities, indigenous markets, volcanic landscapes and wildlife makes it appealing for both nature-focused and culturally curious travellers.
Quito, the capital, is known for one of the best-preserved colonial centres in Latin America, while Guayaquil is the country's largest city and main commercial and port hub. Cuenca attracts visitors with its cobbled streets, churches and crafts, and smaller towns such as Otavalo and Baños are popular stops for markets, hot springs and outdoor activities.
The Andes dominate the centre of the country, with volcanoes such as Cotopaxi and Chimborazo, cloud forests around Mindo and the highland corridor known as the Avenue of the Volcanoes. To the east, the Amazon basin extends into dense rainforest, while the Pacific coast offers beaches, mangroves and whale watching in season. The Galápagos Islands remain the country's best-known natural destination, with wildlife found nowhere else on Earth.
Ecuador also plays a role in regional trade and international tourism, with Quito and Guayaquil hosting business travellers, conferences and events throughout the year. Its Spanish colonial heritage, indigenous cultures and natural reserves form a central part of the visitor experience.
International flights arrive mainly at Quito's Mariscal Sucre International Airport and Guayaquil's José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport, with domestic connections to the Galápagos and other cities. A network of highways and intercity bus services makes travel between airports, cities, hotels, business districts and tourist destinations reasonably straightforward.
