About Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas
Santo Domingo de los Colorados, commonly called Santo Domingo, is the capital of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas province in western Ecuador and one of the country's busiest commercial crossroads. It sits about 133 km west of Quito at roughly 625 m above sea level, where the Andean foothills open toward the Pacific lowlands, giving the city a warm, humid tropical climate. The name comes from the Tsáchila people, who traditionally dye their hair red with achiote, and the city remains the main gateway between the highlands and the coast.
Santo Domingo grew from a small settlement into Ecuador's fourth most populous city on the strength of its location at the junction of routes linking Quito, Esmeraldas, Manabí and the southern provinces. Its identity is closely tied to the Tsáchila, whose heritage is visible in nearby communities, the Museo Etnográfico Tsáchila and the monument to the Tsáchila leader Joaquín Zaracay in the central park of the same name.
The city centre is a compact commercial area built around avenues such as Quito and 3 de Julio, while outlying districts and rural parishes open onto farmland, palm and cacao plantations and cloud-forest hills. Visitors can explore Tsáchila communities such as Aldea Colorada, botanical gardens and protected forests, or head to the Toachi River and nearby waterfalls for nature-based activities.
Santo Domingo is an important centre for agriculture, cattle ranching and trade, with African palm, cacao, coffee, bananas and tropical fruit among the region's key products. Its role as a transport and logistics hub supports a growing industrial and service economy, and its dining and nightlife concentrate along Avenida Quito and surrounding streets.
For travellers, Santo Domingo works both as a practical stopover between Quito and the coast and as a destination in its own right, offering an accessible introduction to the Tsáchila culture and the productive, green landscapes of Ecuador's western foothills.
