About Zamora Chinchipe

Zamora is the capital of Zamora Chinchipe province in southeastern Ecuador, a compact Amazonian city often called the City of Birds and Waterfalls. It sits in a green valley where the Zamora, Bombuscaro and Jamboé rivers meet, with forested hills rising around the centre and Podocarpus National Park nearby.

Founded in 1549 by Spanish colonizers and re-established several times after Shuar resistance, Zamora later grew as a mining and administrative centre. Its history remains visible in the riverside layout, the central cathedral and monuments honouring Shuar and Amazonian heritage. The city's mining past earned it the nickname Mining Capital of Ecuador, while its forests and waterfalls now shape its modern identity.

Central landmarks include Parque Central, the cathedral, the giant clock known as the Reloj Gigante and the malecón along the Zamora River. The Bombuscaro sector of Podocarpus National Park offers trails, birdwatching and cloud forest, while waterfalls along the Loja–Zamora road include La Gentil, Manto de Novia and Chorrillos.

The compact centre around Parque Central and the malecón is easy to explore on foot, with cafés, small restaurants and markets serving local life. Neighbourhoods such as El Limón and La Chacra add a quieter, residential feel. Local cuisine features fresh river fish, maito, chonta chicha and other Amazonian products, while small hotels and lodges support visitors heading to the national park.

Today Zamora functions as a provincial administrative and services hub, with mining, agriculture, tourism and public institutions driving the local economy. For leisure travellers it is a base for nature and adventure, and for business travellers it is the main gateway to government offices, mining projects and commercial services in the province.
