About Tungurahua
Ambato is the capital of Ecuador's Tungurahua province, a mid-sized Andean city set in a fertile highland valley at around 2,500 metres above sea level. Known as the City of Flowers and Fruits, it pairs a hard-working agricultural and industrial base with a proud literary heritage linked to writers Juan Montalvo, Juan León Mera and Juan Benigno Vela.
The city was largely rebuilt after the 1949 earthquake, giving its centre a modern look alongside colonial-era houses and monuments. Key landmarks include the Catedral de Ambato, the leafy Parque Montalvo, the Quinta de Juan León Mera and the Casa del Portal museum, while the nearby La Liria botanical garden showcases Andean plants and birdlife.
Neighbourhoods such as Ficoa, Atocha and Miraflores each offer a different pace, from quiet tree-lined streets and historic houses to traditional residential life. Just outside the city, Quisapincha is known for leather workshops and Cevallos for footwear, while Baños de Agua Santa and the Tungurahua volcano draw visitors to the province's eastern edge.
Ambato functions as a commercial and industrial hub for central Ecuador, with strengths in leather, footwear, textiles, vehicle bodywork and agricultural trade. Its biggest event is the February Fiesta de las Flores y las Frutas, a carnival of parades, music and flower-filled floats that transforms the city.
For travellers, Ambato works both as a practical stop between Quito and the southern Andes and as a base for exploring Tungurahua's markets, highland scenery and hot springs. Business visitors arrive for regional trade and industry, while leisure travellers use the city as a gateway to Baños, Patate and the surrounding volcanoes.
