About American Samoa
American Samoa is a U.S. territory in the South Pacific, roughly midway between Hawaii and New Zealand. Its five main islands and two coral atolls combine volcanic peaks, rainforest, sheltered harbours and a strong fa'a Samoa culture, creating a distinctive destination for travellers interested in nature and Polynesian tradition.
The main island, Tutuila, is home to the capital Pago Pago and its deep natural harbour, along with the National Park of American Samoa. The neighbouring Manu'a group, made up of Ta'u, Ofu and Olosega, is known for remote landscapes such as Ofu Beach, with its coral sands and clear lagoon.
American Samoa's character is shaped by village life, fa'asamoa customs, traditional fale architecture and local crafts. The scenery ranges from the rainforest slopes of Mount Alava to reef-protected shorelines and sea cliffs, with a wetter season from about November to April and drier conditions from May to October.
As an unincorporated U.S. territory, American Samoa has close American connections, yet tourism remains small-scale and community-focused. Pago Pago International Airport on Tutuila is the main gateway, with inter-island flights linking the Manu'a islands.
Transport on Tutuila relies mainly on a coastal road, local buses and taxis, while small aircraft and boats serve the outer islands. A mix of island flights, private transfers, chauffeur-driven vehicles and rental cars helps travellers move between the airport, accommodations, villages and natural sights.
