About Pago Pago International Airport

Pago Pago International Airport is the main international airport serving Pago Pago, Tutuila Island and the territory of American Samoa. It is a 700-acre public airport owned and operated by the Department of Port Administration of the American Samoa Government and functions as the territory's primary air connection to Hawaii, Samoa and the rest of the United States.

Located about three miles southwest of central Pago Pago in the Tafuna area, the airport handles domestic and international passenger services. Hawaiian Airlines links the island with Honolulu, while Samoa Airways provides regional services to Apia and domestic flights to the Manu'a Islands. The airport's single terminal is built in traditional Samoan architectural style and processes both arrivals and departures.

The airfield dates back to the early 1940s, when it was developed as Tafuna Airfield, and it was later activated in its current public airport role in 1956. Its main runway measures 10,000 feet and supports wide-body aircraft serving the trans-Pacific route.

Travelers can reach central Pago Pago by local Aiga buses, taxis, rental cars or private transfers. Passenger facilities remain relatively basic, with a snack bar, limited shopping and public seating, making advance planning useful for arrivals and departures.
